Actually, we are standing within inches of a lava flow during our trip to the Big Island. We discovered the local legal establishment who won't let you within a mile or two of the volcanic flows go off duty at 10:00 pm (really) and that is when all the locals turn out. Hard to believe we could get so close and it was really warm!
